Every week I volunteer at Atrium Medical Center. My jobs are to discharge patients, transport blood, and make deliveries of things like flowers, stuffed animals, and coloring books. My work is simple, but it is endlessly rewarding. My favorite part of volunteering is talking to patients. I try my best to do anything to make their day better, whether it's a postpartum mother excited to take her baby home for the first time, or a patient who just got out of a difficult surgery. Some patients are frequent visitors who I get to build a relationship with. The conversations I have with patients have impacted me greatly. Before volunteering, I was very reserved, and found it difficult to meaningfully communicate, especially with those older than me or of whom I don’t relate to instantly. However, now I not only am able to communicate with others, but I look forward to it.
